Synagogue Church

Synagogue Church, Nazareth was built in the 12th century AD that was erected by the Crusaders. It is popularly believed that it was this Jewish scared temple where Jesus prayed as a child. The synagogue had come up during the Roman period and it continued to enjoy its status as the sacred site for the Jews. Later it was at the Synagogue Church, Nazareth that Jesus preached.

After the church was built it came under the control of the Franciscans and remained under their authority until the 18th century. Later it was transferred to the Greek Catholics by the ruler, Daher al-Omar. The Synagogue Church, Nazareth was quintessentially a Melkite Greek Catholic possession and in 1887 there were a few other constructions that were made in addition to the existing old structure.

The popularity of the edifice lies in the fact that there were excavations as early as 570 AD that confirmed Jesus’ association with this place. An Italian visitor reported the presence of a copy of the original Bible in this church and the existence of the bench on which Jesus sat. People still believe that it was in the Synagogue Church, Nazareth that Jesus uttered the stirring words of Isaiah 61 (Luke 4:16-27) and also where he endured a rather angry answer (Luke 4:28-30).

Today the synagogue is an important tourist attraction in Nazareth. On your Nazareth tour you cannot miss out on a visit to this scared site. Locating the synagogue church is also rather easy because it is located in the middle of Nazareth old market. It is also not very far from the Basilica of Annunciation and takes only a few minutes. The simple architecture of the church and the historical significance makes the church a really good spot for tourist visit too.

Synagogue Church, Nazareth is also the repository of many documents and crypts that sparingly mention about Jesus. They are among the few evidences that throw some light on the silent early years of Jesus Christ. Today too Christians humbly gather in the precincts to pray and to feel the spirit of god. Tourists also make sure that they visit this part of the country.
