This synagogue was severely destroyed in the year 1837 by an earthquake. The structure was again rebuilt after 20 years. In the year 1948, during the Arab-Israeli War, a bomb dropped in the exterior courtyard of the synagogue. There were many people inside who had taken refuge in the synagogue at that time. Fortunately, not a single person was hurt and this event was considered to be a miracle that occurred in Safed.
The name of Ashkenazi is associated with Synagogue in Safed. But at present this site has become a place of worship for the Sephardic Jews and Hasidic. The Holy Ark of the synagogue is the most impressive structure. The Holy Ark was carved out of olive wood. This beautiful carving was done by a craftsman who was from Galicia. This structure has got strong resemblance to the arks present in the different synagogues in Eastern Europe. The ark also has an anthropomorphic image of the lion.
