According to Hebrew calendar Rosh Hashanah is celebrated on the first and second days of the Tishri. Rosh Hashanah literally means beginning of the year and is also known as the Jewish New Year. It is the time to look back at the mistakes and bring in changes to plan a better year.

On this day the shofar is blown in the synagogue which marks the beginning of the New Year celebrations in Tel Aviv. This is in fact one of the most important observances of this holiday. But if the holiday falls on a Sabbath, ie on Friday then the shofar is not blown.

During this time of the year no work is permitted. People spend their holidays greeting people and meeting friends. They organize community dinners whereby they feast on a sumptuous meal. Another popular observance during this holiday is to eat apples dipped in honey. This symbolizes a sweet wish for the New Year. Many people also eat bread dipped in honey for the same reason.

There are various other observances and practices which include Tashlikh whereby people walk into the rivers with empty pockets. This practice symbolizes casting off sins.

New Year in Tel Aviv is one of the most celebrated times of the year when people participate in various religious practices and take New Year resolutions.
