This name was derived from the fact the fields under the hill were used to cultivate wheat in ancient times. The Horns of Hittim, Tiberias is located on the road to Tiberias. Horns of Hittim in Tiberias are located at a higher altitude of 326 miles or 1,070 feet above the sea level. Horns of Hittim lie 10 kilometers or 6 miles west of Tiberias. It is a hill of modest height which as a result of the collapse of its crater has taken on the characteristic form reflected in its name, the Horns of Hittim. At the top of this hill, Horns of Hittim a decisive battle occurred during the Crusader period.
It is a half-hour walk to the top of the hill on a footpath running up from the main road. From the summit, you can catch stunning views of the Eastern Galilee and the Sea of Galilee. On 4 July, 1187, Saladin inflicted an annihilating defeat on the Crusaders at the Horns of Hittim. The battle between the Crusaders and the Arab armies took place, in hope to break the siege off the Crusaders’ fortress in the city.
On top of the Horns of Hittim, Tiberias, there are traces of walls that were built around the edges. In the center of the hill is the crater that includes very large stones. In the south side of the hill, on a higher peak, you will get to see the defense walls. The hill of Horns of Hittim was inhabited from the Bronze Age and the city walls on the edge of the hill were built in the late bronze period.
According to some Christian legends, this hill was the place where Lord Jesus gave his important sermon on the mountain to the people who assembled to see and hear him. During the Crusaders’ period, the biblical city on the hill was abandoned and the knights that fled to the top during the battle could not find any water and at last was forced to surrender.
During Israel’s War of Independence, the villagers of Hittim used the hill to attack the traffic to Tiberias. They constructed communication trenches and fortifications on the edges of the hill. Horns of Hittim, Tiberias, thus have a historical importance of its own.
