Florence is a small city and can be enjoyed on foot. Driving in the historically famed center of Florence is permitted only to residents or people who work there. So you are requested to check firsthand with your hotel for details. Parking is limited and when it gets chaotic, the towing is efficient. There is underground parking near the Santa Maria Novella railway station
There are plenty of pick pockets as the city abounds with tourists with fat wallets. Please use your hotel safe box or a body pack (if put up at a hostel) for passport, jewelery and extra money. Do carry photocopies of important documents at all times. The pick pockets are all over but more so in the open air markets such as the San Lorenzo
Watch out for people who look like gypsies, and small children with glib hands and tongues. They may try to divest you of your valuables using dolls, newspapers and the like. The Ponte Necchio is a happening area in this unfortunate respect too
Another one of our Florence travel tips is that the locals are not particularly known for tipping
Florence has many bars which serve good wine. There are separate rates for standing at the bar and for being served sitting. Sitting down can be twice as costly. There are bars too which do not discriminate in this regard so you may wish to save some money. Lastly do not visit a bar in a shady looking areas. Your safety is our concern.
Your hosts in Florence do not drink red wine with food not just alone and may not have a cappuccino after meals. So learn more about more local customs leisurely
