History of Italy

History of Italy is quite descriptive and full of events were prominent landmarks in the country but also across the world. This was the nation which was the cradle of the earth's greatest civilizations and houses the Roman Catholic church. If you leaf through pages of history of Italy you will find it awe inspiring and intriguing as well. Italy fascinates you with its rich glorious past and that essence still remains in the magnificent buildings here , a truly architectural marvel.

Italy was one of the richest nation for twenty-five hundred years and evolved only in 1871 . Before this time period this country faced political divisions and it comprised of a innumerable independent cities, provinces and islands. There was predominant influence of Etruscan, Greek and Roman culture which is evident in the modern day Italy.

The landmark event in the history of Italy was the formation of the Roman republic in 509 B.C and greatest ruler of all times, Julius Caesar. The Roman empire has within its suzerainty Britain,Gaul, parts of Germany,Greece and the Balkhans and there were other kingdoms as well in its fold which comprise of modern day Syria,Lebanon,Turkey,Israel and parts of North Africa. The Roman empire ascended great heights and was noted for its sound laws, city planning and centralized government. The Romans were great warriors and thus they ruled over Europe from Scotland to Iraq to Egypt to Morocco. But the 5th and the 6th century saw the decline of Rome due to invasions of Huns and Barbarian tribes.

After the fall of Roman empire Constantinople emerged as a powerful kingdom. Rome lost all its powerful influence when its population was reduced from one million to some 20,000 in the Dark Ages. The period between Mid-15th century and the mid-18th century saw Italian city states fighting against the Spanish and French domination. After a long and chaotic period these states got independence . The independent states had political stability and economic prosperity for the next fifty years. Sound administration and judicial reforms were some of the features which were noted . The history of Italy was marked by the work of monarchs like Maria Teresa of Australia and Joseph II in Lombardy, Bernardo Tanucci at Naples, Pietro Leopoldo in Tuscany and Pius VI at Rome.

Then the period of the First World War (1870-1915) saw progress of the entire nation and infusion of this trend was due to a pause in international politics. Italy got time to strengthen its financial conditions and sort out the administration. There were series of development like rail network and primary industries were developed. Also international political relations were strengthened.

In the 1850s already there were talks of a united Italian nation and the history of Italy was greatly influenced by the reign of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini . After the World War II a unified Italian nation was formed. And the Italian Republic was formed in 1946, though the government took over the control in 1948. Italy since then has marched forward as a modern nation though maintaining its traditions.
