Cathedral Museum

Cathedral Museum, Prato was designed to restore works of arts which are linked to the Cathedral and the cult of the Sacred Belt. One of the famous tourist attractions in Prato the Museum was opened to the public in 1967. There were two rooms situated between the square and the Romanesque cloister. Later on the Cathedral Museum, Prato was expanded so as to house the works from diocesan churches and the exalted relief of the Pulpit by Donatello which was detached from the outside in 1969 for preservation.

Here you will find an attractive museum path which is segmented into some rooms of the ancient Palace of Parish Priests located around the Romanesque cloister. They finally culminate in the "Vaults" beneath the Cathedral. Prato Cathedral Museum has the Room of the Thirteenth-Fourteenth centuries, which are painted with monochromatic poster color by Antonio di Miniato . Admire here paintings of Giovanni Bonsi, Lorenzo di Niccolò and Giovanni Toscani.

The Cathedral Museum, Prato houses a number of ancient frescoed fenestella belonging to 13th century. There is also a relief in sandstone from the Montepiano Abbey, the "Madonna on the throne among St. Michael Archangel, St. Peter and St. Paul". There is also an impressive wood carving of a "Madonna with Child" . There is an adjacent Room of Tapestries houses as well as illuminated anthem books from the 13th-16th centuries . There is also a unique Tapestry of St. Stephen, gift of Alessandro de' Medici in red velvet crisscrossed on a gold sliver background (with pomegranate pattern), embellished with pieces of embroidery.

In the Pulpit Room the breastwork of the exterior pulpit of the Cathedral designed by Donatello (Donato de' Bardi, 1386 - 1466) is worth special mention. Here there are seven exemplified panels of sculptures so designed that they stand apart from the rest as well as four small white marble elements. In this room of the Cathedral Museum,Prato you would also find the 15th century paintings like “Iacopone da Todi” ,fresco by Paolo Uccello and exquisite painting "Madonna and Saints" . Then you just cannot miss the Casket of the Sacred Belt by Maso di Bartolomeo here.

The Cathedral Museum, Prato is closed on Tuesdays and the ticket which you get here is also valid for admission to the exhibition ¨Immagini del sacro¨ at the Cloister of St. Dominic - St. Dominic's Square, and to the Emperor's Castle. Children below 12 years are provided free entry.
