New Year in Fukuoka

New Year in Fukuoka is celebrated in Fukuoka with a blast. New Year in Fukuoka is celebrated like almost every other city across the globe on January 1 every year. Before 1873, the date of the Japanese New Year was based on the Chinese lunisolar calendar and celebrated at the beginning of spring, just as the modern Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese New Years are celebrated. In 1873, five years after the Meiji Restoration, Japan accepted the Gregorian calendar, so the first day of January became the official New Year's Day in modern Japan. It is one of the most important yearly Japanese festivals and has been celebrated for centuries with its own unique customs.

Many large stores also have large junk like these seen at the time of New Year in Fukuoka. Three bamboo poles adorned with flowers and pines are very typical, but different regions of Fukuoka have somewhat unusual types of New Year's shows. The people of the city do not usually use fireworks. But this too is due to the slowly changing nature of festivities in the west, and in some more populated areas or amusement parks the people can see some burning of fireworks. Fireworks for home can not be found anywhere and if the people want to light some up they can buy them when they are on sale during the summer generally till the end of August.

The Japanese people eat a special selection of dishes during the New Year in Fukuoka. This celebration is called osechi ryori. Many of these dishes are sweet, sour, or dried so they can keep without refrigeration. The cooking customs date to a time before the people had refrigerators. There are many diversities of osechi and several foods eaten in one region are not eaten in other places on New Year's Day. Sashimi and sushi are often eaten, as well as non Japanese food is also eaten. Seven herb rice soup is prepared on the seventh day of January known as jinjitsu to let the overworked stomach rest. The special food is made ready for the New Year's week which is a joy for many Japanese people.
