Nagoya Castle

The Nagoya Castle, Nagoya is located in Nagoya Aichi, Japan. The original castle was built around 1525 by Imagawa Ujichika built the original castle around 1525. In 1532 it was Oda Nobuhide who took it from Imagawa Ujitoyo and abandoned it later.

Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1610 ordered the daimyo to assist in the building of a new castle on the same site. The new castle was supposed to be the new capital of the Owari province. There were many materials used and these were brought from the smaller Kiyosu Castle. This was located in the provincial capital of Kiyosu. The construction of the Nagoya castle construction was completed in the year 1612.It was during the Edo period that the Nagoya castle became the centre of one of the most important castle towns in Japan. It was the most important stop that came along the Tokaido road and this acted as a link the two capitals of Kyoto and Edo.

The Nagoya Castle, Nagoya actually housed the Owari Tokugawa clan of the Tokugawa family till the Meji Era. Afterwards that is during the Second World War the castle was destroyed and was rebuilt again. On top of the Nagoya Castle, Nagoya you will find that there are two golden imaginary tiger-headed fishes. These are called the kinshachi or the kin no shachihoko. This particular motif is used as a talisman for preventing disastrous fires. He fishes also stand as an insignia of the authority of the feudal lord. During World War II the Nagoya Castle, Nagoya was the District Army Headquarters. The castle was destroyed by fire during the course of an USAF air raid on May 14, 1945. Nearly all the artifacts were destroyed but many of the paintings inside survived. Now it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations of Japan.
