Jordan is situated towards the western part of Asia. The country is bordered by the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. Jordan shares its borders with Syria, Iraq, Israel and Saudi Arabia. It is one of the middle eastern countries. The country is covered mainly by dry desert regions.
World Heritage Sites in Jordan: Petra, Jordan
Petra is an ancient Nabataean city situated towards the southern part of Jordan. The city has been honored as a World Heritage Site in 1985. It is one of the exquisite archaeological sites in the country of Jordan. The city has been voted as the world's seventh wonder. This ancient city with its priceless monuments are housed within the Pectra Park. The park is spread over an area of 100 square miles. The park is landscaped by canyons. The city houses more than a thousand burial monuments. The inscriptions on the tombs reveal that they were erected by Nabataean sculptors. Besides, there are Nabataean graveyards situated near Petra. In ancient times it served as a burial city. It also served as a pilgrimage site. History has it that the city had a bathhouse, festival theater, temples, nymphaeum, pools and public buildings.
As you enter the city of Petra you will find the Siq which is a long, meandering sandstone canyon. You will able to spot beautiful carvings on the rock walls. Besides, you also see the ruins of terracotta pipes on the sides of the canyon. During Roman times these pipes served to carry water. After visiting the Siq head towards the magnificent Treasury. Look out for the urn that is perched on the top of the Treasury. The burn used to contain hidden treasures of the Pharaohs. Next, visit the Street of Facades which is a large yawing canyon dotted with facades of a numerous tombs. Where the Street of Facades ends you will find the Roman Theater. And just opposite the theater you will find the Royal Tombs. The other attraction of the park is the Monastery (ad-Deir). It is Petra's largest carved monument. It was built in the 1st century AD.
