Roman Theater, Amman



The Roman Theater, Amman is one of the great tourist attractions in Amman. This is the place of sightseeing in Amman which can never be left unseen during the Amman Tour. The Roman Theater, Amman was built during the reign of Antonius Pius between 38-161 AD.

Amman is the capital city of the Kingdom of Jordan. It is also the administrative capital and the principal commercial center of Jordan and boasts most of the important buildings of the country. The city has sharp resemblance to Rome. Both of them were located on the seven hills and therefore is still the favorite place of the Roman soldiers and other officials.

For ages altogether, Amman has offered rooms to different civilizations. The first civilization dates back to the Neolithic period about 6500 years ago.

There is a Roman Forum in Jordan. The Roman theater, Amman stands behind it. The Theater is constructed by cutting the northern side of a hill which used to serve as the necropolis or the graveyard. The construction pattern and the architecture of Roman Theater, Amman is very similar to the amphitheater in Jerash. The Roman Theater, Amman is the largest theater in the region and can accommodate about 6000 spectators. The theater is still very much in use and various sports events and cultural gatherings constituting theatrical and musical performances take place in Roman Theater, Amman.

At the foundation of the theater, there are two small theaters. The Jordan Folklore Museum stands at the right wing of the theater and displays exhibits depicting the traditions and the social life of the people of Jordan. The Museum of Popular Traditions is at the other end of the theater. It displays, traditional costumes of Jordan, fine embroideries and beautiful antique jewelery. The Museum of Popular Tradition remains open daily from 9:00AM-5:00 PM and is closed on Tuesday. The Museum of Folklore is also open daily from 9:00AM-5:00PM and on Friday from 10:00AM-4:00PM.
