History of Kenya


History of Kenya one of the most ancient countries of the world, Kenya has a rich history. The History of Kenya dates back to several million years and consists of tales about per historic civilization and colonization.

Historical records and excavation carried out over here have proved the fact that the primates walked on the lands of this country more than 20 million years ago. The hominids, primarily the Homo Habilis and Homo Erectus lived in the fertile rift valley of the country, during the Pleistocene period. By 3000-1500B.C., the Nolites of the Nile and the Cushitio of North Ethiopia moved in to this country. The Bantu speaking cattle herders migrated to this country between 500B.C. and 500A.D. The Bantus were responsible for spreading the Swahili culture over here.

Kenya has a rich colonial history. The Portuguese people were the first to visit this country. Vasco da Gama visited this country in the year 1498. The Portuguese gained control over the eastern part of the country after 1505. They attacked Mombasa and created a fort over there in the year 1593. The Portuguese rules these places and carried out their trade activities for a long time till the Omani Arabs gained control over the area during the seventeenth century.

In Kenya History By 1730, the Omani Arabs took control over the Kenyan Coast. The Arabs controlled only the coastal parts of the country. During the Arab rule clove plantations were set up over here and slave trade also became extremely prominent. In 1839, the Omani Arabs shifted their capital to Zanzibar, under Seyyid Said, which helped in consolidating and strengthening their control over this region.

By the late nineteenth century, the country became a colony of the British Empire. The British navy managed to restrict and check the powers of the Omani Arabs, by taking control over the ports of the country. In fact, both the British and the Germans jointly were responsible for restricting and curtailing the hold of the Omani Arabs in Kenya. The Mau Mau Rebellion that lasted from 1952 to 1960 was one of the biggest events in the History of Kenya. It was an uprising by the Kikuyu Rebels against the British rule. The country was under emergency during this period. Thereafter a lot of events and discussions were held which eventually led to the end of the Mau Mau military group. The country gained independence on the 12th of December in year 1963. The first government of the country was formed by Jomo Kenyatta and his party the Kenya African National Union.

History of Kenya is filled with tales of wars and limitary insurgence, which was responsible for ending colonial rule in the country and helping it to gain independence.
