Lake Nakuru National Park




A visit to the Nakuru National Park, Kenya is a must visit site as part of your Kenya travel. With its unique vegetation of about 550 different plant species, 56 different mammal species including white rhinos, and flamingoes and other avian varieties of about 450 species, it is one of the major Kenya National Parks. Lake Nakuru, a shallow strongly alkaline lake of 62 square km of total area, is set in the picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland. The Nakuru National Park, Kenya was first recognized as a bird sanctuary in 1960 and was elevated to the status of a National Park in 1968.

Nakuru National Park, Kenya is located in the Nakuru District of the Rift Valley Province in Central Kenya, around 140k m north-west of Nairobi. The landscape includes areas of marsh and grasslands interspersed with rocky cliffs and outcrops, stretches of acacia woodland and rocky hillsides covered with Euphorbia forest on the eastern region.


The lake is surrounded by the Menengai crater in the north, the Bahati hills in the north east, the lion hill ranges in the east, eburu crater in the south and the mau escarpment in the west. Three small rivers -- the njoro, makalia and enderit along with the outflow from several springs along the shore flow into the lake. The lake is world famous for its millions of fuschia pink flamingoes. The lake of the Nakuru National Park, Kenya is rich in other birdlife species. There are over 400 resident species found on the lake and in the surrounding areas. Little grebes, white winged black terns, stilts, avocets, and ducks and in the European winter the migrant waders are frequently seen.
