History of Lesotho

It became a single unit in 1822 under the chief named Moshoeshoe and was recognized as such in 1843 and later in 1868 by the United Nations. When it gained full independence under the Commonwealth of Nations in 1966 it changed its name. The government of Lesotho is actually a constitutional monarchy.

According to the records of 2003 the population of Lesotho was about 1,802,000 of which about 70% lives in the fertile lowlands while the rest inhabit the foothills and more rocky terrains. It is divided into ten districts namely: Berea, Butha-Buthe, Mafeteng, Leribe, Maseru, Mohale's Hoek, Quacha's Nek, Mokhotlong, Thaba-Tseba and Quthing.

Climate of Lesotho

Lesotho enjoys cool temperatures throughout the year due to its high attitudinal location. There are two primary seasons:

  • Summer which experiences rainfall in the form of thunderstorms. Temperatures in the surrounding lowlands as well as Maseru can reach 30 degrees in this season.

  • Winters are cold and snowfall is plenty with the temperature plumbing to -7 degrees Celsius in the lowlands whereas the highlands can have record lows of -18 degrees Celsius.
