Start your excursions by visiting the famous Mokhotlong, which means 'The Place of the Bald Ibis', in Sesotho (mokhotlo). This place is a bird lover's paradise and is rich in birdlife. The species of birds available in this region include the Bald Ibis, Verreaux' Black Eagle, Cape Vulture and the Bearded Vulture. It is the main centre of a vast mountainous area in the east of the country.

Thaba-Bosiu is the greatest national monument of Lesotho. It is a flat-topped hill which was used by Moshoeshoe I as his citadel. On top of the hill there are the substantial remains of the King's dwellings and villages. This place is accessed by a good tarred road to a small information centre from where visitors have an easy climb. Here also lay the remains of Moshoeshoe's village and the views are fantastic.
