The Sani Pass in Mokhotlong is one of the most spectacular mountain passes in South Africa. The Sani Pass up through the steep cliffs of the Drakensberg escarpment in a series of tight zigzag curves. The route was used in the earlier times by pack animals to bring goods up from South Africa to the colonial outpost of Mokhotlong in eastern Lesotho and the surrounding villages.

It was opened to the vehicle traffic by the efforts of David Alexander and his company, the Mokhotlong Mountain Transport in the year 1955. Today the Sani Pass in Mokhotlong has been improved, but is nevertheless quite sheer and very rough. In the winter season, it occasionally gets blocked by a heavy snowfall, and ice can set a problem for the tourists to get the Pass.

The South African border post is at the bottom of the main climb, located at a distance of about 1900 meters. This is an international border, so passports are required for every individual. The Sani Pass border is open from 8 am to 4 pm daily. The road climbs to the summit of the Sani Pass at an altitude of 2874 meters. Here, you will get to see the Basotho border post and the Basotho village of Sani Top.

The views from the pass and its summit are simply fabulous and you can take pictures of the adjoining areas from here. From Sani Top, the road continues on across the Sani Flats, and ascends the Kotisepola Pass at over 3250 meters before dropping down towards the town of Mokhotlong. In the town, tourists can shop at the local markets and stroll along the paths.

A trip up the Sani Pass, Mokhotlong combines amazing scenic splendor with a fascinating glimpse of the unique mountain culture of the Basotho folks.
