Music of Liberia




The Music of Liberia comprises several important genres of pop that were influenced from neighboring countries like Ghana and Nigeria. There are a good number of local folk music, Christian music as well as music inluenced by Americo-Liberian minority. The Music of Liberia is also shows influences of United States, R&B and Hip-hop.

Liberia Music reflects the diverse culture of the people from Grand Gedeh to Lofa and also from Cape Mount to Cape Palmas. There are music of rhythm drums, to soul, jazz and blues.

The Popular Music includes the Highlife music that is widely played across the country and also throughout the West Africa. It originated in Ghana, Sierra Leone and Liberia and is a rich mix of North American, West Africa and Latin American style that had its origin in the 1950s. The Liberain Kru people who were sailors were mainly responsible for bringing the style to the country. These people used to play Spanish guitar, banjo, harmonica, accordion, mandolin, concertina and penny whistle.

The country is seeing a new breed of musicians who have created their own style of music called HIP-CO. This is in English or local vernacular style. This kind of music is very popular among the youth and adults alike. The music reflects all aspects of life in the country.

Matta Fahnbulleh is one of the finest musicians of the country and has one of the best voices of Africa. Another famous singer is Princess Hawa Daisy Moore. Born in Liberia, She grew in to a great musician of the country. Another talented musician is Molly Dorley, whose music reflects the clash between western influence and local musician. the music of Dorley gave the much needed impetus to first recorded music of the Culture of Liberia that was not allowed to blossom by the ruling political class. Music like "Who are you baby, oh!" and "Grand Gedeh County Oh! Oh!" marked the start of the appreciation of Liberian music.

Dorley along with Anthony "Experience" Nagbe of the "Tejajlu" musical group are among the pioneers who elevated their native music through rhythmic music to the international level.
