Christmas in Liechtenstein

Christmas in Liechtenstein is a special season for the people of Liechtenstein. It is the time for family get -together and warm greetings. Christmas in Liechtenstein is celebrated in a way that is sure to bring back feelings of nostalgia for your old days.

Celebration of Christmas in Liechtenstein starts from the starting of the month of December itself. By 6th or 7th of the month, everyone in Liechtenstein gets into the mood for celebration. Like other parts of the world, Santa Claus is an important and integral part of Christmas in Liechtenstein. But in Liechtenstein Christmas Celebrations, there is another character that gets into the picture. He is known as the Christmas Angel or the 'Christkindli' in the local language.

Every year, usually a family person or a relative dresses up as Santa Claus and visits every household. Santa Claus then tells the children of the household whether they have been good or not in that particular year. After this ritual, Santa Claus listens to the children's request. Each child gets the opportunity to ask for what he or she desires.

Eventually, on Christmas Eve, the children find what they had asked for, appear magically, under the Christmas tree in their homes. In other parts of the world, the common story told is that it is Santa Claus who brings the Christmas gifts for the kids who have behaved well that year. But the only difference in Liechtenstein is that the children believe that the gifts are brought over by Christmas angel and not Santa Claus.

Christmas excitement in Liechtenstein mounts and reaches its peak around two weeks before Christmas. The Christmas tree is brought home around this time and the spirit of the festival can be felt all around. There is palpable excitement throughout the country.

On Christmas Eve, the presents are decorated under the Christmas tree and the children go to bed hoping that the Christmas angel has brought them their favorite presents. The next day morning, the entire family gathers around the Christmas tree and open their presents. It is a complete family affair. Sometimes, Christmas presents are even opened on Christmas Eve itself.

Christmas is basically a time for family bonding and cherishing. Many families later go to visit their relatives in the nearby villages. A lot of exchange of gifts and presents happen at this time. Christmas in Liechtenstein is a time for celebration for the entire population. Liechtenstein residents love to celebrate this festival in their own traditional way every year.
