The history of Liechtenstein has gone through various interesting phases since 1434. The country of Liechtenstein is bordered by several landlocked countries in the high Alpine region in Western Europe. That is the reason to call it a doubly landlocked country. The country is often refereed as the Principality of Liechtenstein. The territory of the country was marked between the Holy Roman Empire and the Swiss cantons. The country gained a political identity with the formation of the sub-county of Lower Rhaetia after the death of Charlemagne in 814. After many centuries, the country of Vaduz was developed in 1342 and became an important dependency of the Holy Roman Empire in 1396. Gradually, the country was ruled by various families which include the counts of Montfort, von Brandis, van Sulz, and von Hohenems. The Geography of Liechtenstein was also been immensely influenced by the history in respect of the administrative division.
Liechtenstein history let you know about the rule of the Australian troop during the Thirty Years' War that continued from 1618 to 1648. After the completion of the war, the area was occupied by the Swedes in 1647. During the Napoleonic War, the country was again occupied by Both French and Russians.
In 1805 Liechtenstein joined the Confederation of the Rhine and in 1815, it joined the newly formed Germanic Confederation after the downfall of Napoleon. 1818 is the time when Johann I granted constitution to the country and the constitution was published in 1862. The year also marked the visit of one of the Sovereign Prince in Liechtenstein, which never happened again till 1842. Although during the Second World War the country remained neutral.
The end of the World War I gave rise to a major outcome, when Austria got tied up with Lie. This was a striking event in the history of Liechtenstein. These can be chronologically displayed as follows:
- 1919: Liechtenstein and Switzerland signed a treaty
- 1938: The old Prince Franz I was abdicated
- 1967: The Liechtensteinian Dynasty sorted to selling various priceless family treasures like the portrait 'Ginevra de' Benci' by Leonardo de Vinci. It was a major loss in terms of the culture of Liechtenstein.
- 1978: Liechtenstein became member of the Council of Europe.
- 1989: Liechtenstein became a significant financial center, when Prince Hans- Adam succeeded his father.
- 1990: Liechtenstein joined United States
- 1991: Liechtenstein joined the European Free Trade Association
- 1995: The country joined both European Economic Area and World Trade Organization
- 2003: Prince Hans- Adam won by majorityin favour of the constitution and acquired much power than the other European monarchs.
- 2007: The ruling Prince appointed two honorary Consuls in USA , which was really an unique happening in the history of the Liechtenstein Principality.
