The first recorded history of sports in Liechtenstein dates back to the year 1789 when a shooting ordinance was passed. Among the other preserved documents a membership memo dating back to 1802 is also found. According to the records people of Liechtenstein were equally enthusiastic about other games like cycling, tennis, motor sports, gymnastics and the most important of the lot skiing. A discussion about sports in Liechtenstein will be incomplete without a mention of Princely Hunter Master Josef Negele who is known as one of the first few known skiers of the world.

Many who watched him maneuver his skis through the snowy slopes though that he was crazy but later skiing in Liechtenstein became immensely popular. There was another person who has contributed in the popularity of the game is Friedrich Kaufmanm who skied on the Malbun Valley for the first time. The year 1910 is an important year in the history of Liechtenstein as Friedrich continuously skied for 10 consecutive days. It was in 1926 that the first official ski association "Liechtenstein Ski Club" was formed and then as the sports gained popularity a "Samina Ski Club" was also founded.

If we look at the sports events in Liechtenstein we will find that gymnastics is equally popular as the Triesen and the Balzers clubs were established in the early 30's. It was in 1886 that an official association was established in Vaduz. Sports in Liechtenstein comprise a discussion about other games like football, and motor sports.
