There were some prehistoric settlements of the Malanser and the Schneller around the territory of Eschen which are mostly formed during the Neolithic times. The first mention of the municipality was in the Carolingian imperial register in about 850 A.D. The name was most possibly a derivation of the Celtic "essa" meaning, by the water. There was also a Roman Villa whose foundation walls have been excavated in Nendeln.
