Geography: London sprawling over an area of 1579 km sq is one of the largest cities of the world. River Thames flows across the city from southwest to east. The river valley is surrounded by Parliament and Primrose Hills. Many of the tributaries of Thames River now flow underground. London is regarded to be the driest among all the European capital cities. January is the coolest month, July being the warmest.
History: The early settlement began in 43 AD by the Romans in London. The whole of London, under the leadership of queen Boudica, was burned by the Iceni tribes in 61 AD. Then in 100 AD the city again prospered under the Romans. With the Anglo Saxons, London went through a resettlement by 600 AD. The Duke of Normandy was crowned as the king of England in 1066, after winning the Battle oh Hastings. In 1603 James VI of Scotland became the king of England. London started growing from the 18th century. It remained the largest city of the world from 1831 to 1925. After the two world wars, London went through a massive re-building. Colossal architectural structures were put up in large amount throughout London from 1950 to 1970.

Economy: London, along with New York City, are the two primary cities controlling the international business and world economy today. Nearly 19% of UK’s GDP is thrown in by London alone. The city is a businessmen’s hub and is also the largest investment banking centre in Europe leading the world in international bond trading, foreign exchange trading, and cross-border lending.
Society & Cultural Life: Life Style is at its best in London. Courteous people in very fashionable clothes flank the city. The people of London have great love for theatre, opera, films, music, sports, and arts. Most of the London films are premiered at Leicester Square. The love for literature has made London the setting for many dramas, plays, novels, and short stories. littérateurs. London is also a hub of western classical music. The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Elton John, are famous all over the world for their magnificent contribution in the field of music.
Transport System: The public transport of London is controlled by the Transport of London and has bagged the award of “city for best public transport.” There are five airports in London, making it the world best international transport hub. The busiest airport of the world is London Heathrow Airport. The other airports of London are London Gatwick Airport, London Stansted Airport, London Luton Airport, and London City Airport. London is very well connected through London Underground, and City & South London Railway.
Administration and Government: Co-coordinated by the Greater London Authority, the administration of London has two divisions: strategic tier and local tier. The local administration is divided into 33 smaller districts. GLA controls the strategic planning, policing, fire service, transport, and economic development of the city. The Mayor of London is Ken Livingstone.
Educational Institutions: Needless to mention London is the home of the best educational centers of the world producing thousands of scholars every year. The London University with 125,000 students is the largest educational institution of the world. UCL, King's and Queen Mary, the London School of Economics, SOAS, the Royal Academy of Music and the Institute of Education all are affiliated under the umbrella of London University. The other eminent universities of London are Brunel University, City University, London Metropolitan University, Middlesex University, UEL, the University of Westminster, and London South Bank University.
