Luxembourg

Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe. Politically known as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the country is the sole representative of sovereign Grand Duchy in the world. One of the seats of historic and strategic importance, Luxembourg, Europe still holds immense importance in the political consensus in favor of economic, political and military integration in the continent. Luxembourg has been among the founding members of the European Union, NATO, the United Nations, Benelux and the Western European Union.

History of Luxembourg:

The history of the country dates back to the acquisition of Luxembourg Castle, earlier known as Lucilinburhuc. Seized by Siegfried, Count of Ardennes in 963 AD, the name of the fort is the source of the current name of the country. A town gradually developed around this fort that became the state of strategic importance. In the year 1437, the succession crisis of the ‘House of Luxembourg’ led the territory being sold to Philip the Good of Burgundy. With the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815, the country became a matter of dispute between Prussia and the Netherlands. During the second world war, Luxembourg joined the Allies in fighting Germany.

Economy of Luxembourg:

The stable economical infrastructure of Luxembourg is characterized by moderate growth, low unemployment and low inflation rate. The industrial sector of the country is dominated mainly by steel, rubber and chemicals. Agriculture in Luxembourg is based on the traditional small family owned farms. Since the country is a part of the economic union of Benelux, Luxembourg shares close trade relations with Belgium and the Netherlands.

Demography of Luxembourg:

Since the country lies in close proximity to both Romance Europe and Germanic Europe, the cultural traditions present a wonderful concoction of both the traditions. Many languages are spoke in the country among which the official languages are French, German, and Luxembourgish. The natives of the country belong to the Celtic origin with a French and Germanic blend. Although a secular country, Roman Catholicism is the predominant religion of Luxembourg.
