Geography of Luxembourg

Geography of Luxembourg is an extremely varied one. One of the smallest countries in Europe, Luxembourg occupies an area of 2,586 square kilometers. A thorough knowledge of Luxembourg geography is instrumental as it helps you to plan you tour in a better manner. Bordered by countries like France and Germany, Luxembourg becomes a landlocked country separated from the North Sea by Belgium. The diversity of geography of Luxembourg makes it an interesting country to explore.

Located in the Low Countries, Luxembourg is situated in the western parts of Europe. Though a small country, the varied topography of Luxembourg makes it somewhat distinct. The north of the country, popularly known as the Oesling is home to the plateau of the Ardennes, one of the distinctive features of geography of Luxembourg. The heights of the mountains here range from 1,500 to almost 2,000 feet. The capital of the country is located on the southern parts of Luxembourg. The highest point at the Ardennes plateau rises up to 1,834 feet.

Covering the two-third of the geographical territory of Luxembourg spans the Gutland in the south of Sûre River. The extreme south of the country is known as "the land of the red rocks" as the color of soil reflects the enriched deposition of minerals. The grape-growing valley of the Moselle in the east has earned it the nickname of "Little Switzerland". The rivers in Luxembourg constitute an important part of geography of Luxembourg. Major rivers like Moselle and Sûre are efficiently supplemented by smaller rivers like the Eisch, the Alzette, the Our and the Pétrusse.

The typically Marine West Coast climate forms an important part of geography of Luxembourg. The characteristic of the weather is high precipitation during late summers and snowy and dry winters. The best season to be at Luxembourg is from May to mid-October. You can enjoy ‘Indian Summer’ in Luxembourg during September and October.
