These underground passages were constructed on various levels. The passages can be found built in different levels. The wonderful design of the defense system has made Luxembourg famous by the name `Gibraltar of the North’. The passages reach 40 meters beneath the ground.

In the year 1867, the fortress was leveled. However, about 17 kilometers stretch of Casemates Bock, Luxembourg City was found to be standing intact. Since the year 1933, the Bock and Pétrusse casemates have been opened for public viewing. In the year 1994, UNESCO recognized the Old Town and the walls of the fortress ramparts as World Heritage sites.
