National Culture Policy of Malaysia

Different Races that make up the culture of Malaysia

There are a number of races in Malaysia that play a great part in forming the culture of the country. These are:

  • Malay
  • Chinese
  • Indian
  • Orang Asli and indigenous people

Malay: These are the largest ethnic group in Malaysia covering more than half the population. All of them are Muslims but Malays of different areas speak their own unique dialects. You can find traditional Malay culture in the villages.

Chinese: The second largest ethnic group in Malaysia that settled in and around Malacca and gradually adopted elements of Malaysian culture. They are mainly known as Peranakan in Malaysia. All of them are Tao Buddhist and follow a set of practices, beliefs, and arts, combining Malay and Chinese traditions and thus creates a new culture.

Indians: The third largest ethnic group of Malaysia that came from South India and settled in this country during the nineteenth century.

Orang Asli and indigenous people: They are the oldest inhabitants as well as the indigenous tribes of Malaysia. They cover a meager 5% of the total country's population. They are mainly seen in East Malaysia in Sabah and Sarawak provinces. In Sabah, the largest official ethnic group is Kadazan while in Sarawak, the dominant tribal groups are the Dayak, Iban and Bidayuh.
