Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malacca is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Malaysia. It covers an area of 50000 square meters. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malacca was established in the year 1645 by Lee Wei King. After the British invasion a separate board of trustees was established to administer the temple. This temple is situated in the urban area of Malacca. This temple is not only a historical monument but it is also one of the finest and oldest traditional monuments of Malaysia.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Malacca is finely decorated. The main gate is along Jalan Tokong and as you enter the temple premises you will find several prayer halls. Till date the prayers are offered in traditional Buddhist style. These prayer halls are probably the best ways to find in details about the Buddhist way of worshipping. The main prayer hall is dedicated to the goddess of Mercy, Kuan Min. the other prayer halls are dedicated to several other Taoist gods like gods of wealth, propagation and longevity.

The most outstanding feature of Cheng Hoon Teng Temple in Malacca is the 7 meter red flag that is located atop a pole and is in front of the left wing of the main prayer hall. This temple propagates the Three Doctrinal Systems of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Several traditional Chinese rites are carried out here. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malacca is an important religious site for the Chinese residing in Malacca. Festivals like Chinese New Year, Tee Kong, Birthday of Tiger God, Da Bo Gong’s Birthday, God of Well being and several others are celebrated here.
