Dutch Square

Dutch Square, Malacca is famous for its red-painted buildings. The Dutch Square, Malacca is apparent testimony of Dutch masonry and architectural skills. The Stadthuys, situated in the Square, is believed to have been completed in 1650 and was home to the Dutch governors.

Now, it has turned out to be the Malacca Historical Museum. Also within the surrounding area is Queen Victoria's fountain that was erected in 1901 to honor the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Next to it is the Malacca Clock Tower that was built in 1886 by Tan Jiak Kim.

Dutch Square, Malacca also known as The Stadthuys. It was once a centre of the Dutch administration in Melaka and housed the quarters of its governors and officers. This red building was built between 1641 and 1660 on the ruins of a Portuguese fort, by using imported bricks and is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. The Stadthuys of Malacca was the official residence of the Dutch Governor. It now houses the historic Museum and Ethnography Museum which has many customary bridal costumes and relics on display.

The middle of the Dutch Square, Malacca has a secret borne by the locals. Not everything old and monumental in the Dutch Square, Malacca is Dutch. The Tan Beng Swee clock tower is another example. It was donated by a millionaire in 1886 with a clock imported from England. After a while, the clock died out like colonialism and was put back by a Seiko in 1982. Well, those old folks have less than fond memories of the Japanese occupation it seems. But to no avail, the Seiko is still ticking away merrily at the tower today. Dutch Square Area is situated near Jalan Gereja.

Mahkota Parade that is at a distance of 0.5km, Senyum Super that is at a distance of 1.3km, Tesco that is at a distance of 2.6km, Melaka Mall that is at a distance of 5.6km, Kotamas that is at a distance of 5.6km, Jaya Jusco that is at a distance of 5.7km, Billion that is at a distance of 61.9km are places to shop located near Dutch Square, Malacca.
