Kampung Hulu Mosque

The Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca is one of the oldest operating Mosque of Malaysia. Situated at the corner of Jalan Masjid in the commercial district, the Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca is the outcome of the pluralist religious policy of the Dutch Commission. The area around the Kampung Hulu Mosque in Malacca is thronged with wonderful Chinese shops selling a variety of items. Lots of tourists visit this mosque as it is regarded as one of the best Malacca Tourist Attractions.

The construction of Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca is a remarkable event as the Portuguese rulers of the city had demolished all non Christian buildings during their era. The Dutch revived the other forms of religion by ordering their captains to rebuild the mosques and temples. Due to the patronization of the Dutch rulers , the architecture of the Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca reflects the art of Javanese mosques.

The Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca has three mounting stratum of flared roof pyramidal in shape and divided by disruptions to allow ample amount of light and air. The three tiered roof is supported by four strong and big pillars.

The central upright hierarchy imparts a squarish shape interrupted by a tiny segment of the porch area of the iwan. It bulges from the frontage of the mosque and adds beauty to the entire monument. Masjid Kampung Hulu does not stick to the use of the Javanese practice of using timber as the stuff for building walls. Rather they utilize stone and brick to serve the purpose. The mosque is correspondingly exclusive in its height from the ground.

The Kampung Hulu Mosque like the other Malaccan mosques sports Chinese embellishment. The most prominent example of it is the tiara like apex exceeding the roofs and the rounded overhang. The Kampung Hulu Mosque comprises materials brought in from the Chinese Qing Empire. The ceramic roof along with the floor tiles are of Chinese origin and contribute greatly to the beauty of the mosque. Masjid Kampong Hulu further affirms its individuality by using engraved sea stones on the borders of the dome.

The stone minaret of the Kampung Hulu Mosque, Malacca is in a pagoda-form which signifies its reflection to the traditional Malaccan art.
