Kampung Morten

Kampung Morten, Malacca is situated near Jalan Kampung Morten, near Jalan Tun Mamat, near Jalan Kampung Morten; near Jalan Pinang; and is 0.1 kilometers away from Jalan Tun Mamat. Kampung Morten, Malacca is geographically situated at north of the Equator and longitude, east of the Prime Meridian on the Map of Malacca - Melaka.

The history of Kampong Morten, Malacca can be traced back to the time when two natives of Melaka, Datuk Othman Haji Muhammad nor and Demang Haji Abdul Ghani, bought a piece of land from a Malay tycoon to accommodate people from various nearby villages who had been asked to move.

To keep the Malays from being forced to move out of the city, both of them turned it into a settlement. The land was divided into 100 lots, and 3 years later in 1923, Kampong Morten, Malacca was formally opened by Mr. Morten who was also instrumental in the setting up and development of the village as he had helped in various ways to get the village up and going.

As a result, Kampong Morten, Malacca developed as a cluster of traditional Malay wooden houses stood on stilts occupying over six hectares of what was once swampy land.

Now, Kampong Morten, Malacca is considered as a living museum in the heart of the historical city of Melaka as many of its villagers are still preserving its age old living style apart from the unique architecture of their houses.

A house by the name of Villa Sentosa in the kampong has been converted into a private living museum by its owner, which is a main attraction in this traditional kampong in the heart of the city.

Villa Sentosa is as old as Kampong Morten itself as it was built by one of the kampong’s founder and its headman, Tuan Haji Hashim bin Dato' Demang Haji Abdul Ghani in 1920. Unlike typical Melakan Malay traditional houses commonly found in the village, Villa Sentosa was built in the style of urban Malay house" which was fashionable during the turn of the 20th century without sacrificing the traditional Malay architecture of the region.
