Johor is one of the most developed states in Malaysia. The capital city and royal seat of Johor is Johor Bahru, formerly Tanjung Puteri. The old state capital is Johor Lama. Johor is surrounded by Pahang to the north, Malacca and Negeri Sembilan to the northwest, and the Straits of Johor to the south which is separated by the international border between Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore. Johor has a broad assortment of attractions, from the thrilling urban atmosphere of Johor Bahru to the forests of Endau Rompin Park. The village of Desaru and the remote and gorgeous islands in the South China Sea are preferred by vacationers seeking a tranquil and natural holiday environment, while the state's commercial centers draw businessmen from the whole world.

The state government of Johor is leaded by the Chief Minister or Menteri Besar. The Chief Minister is helped by an executive council, whose members are selected from the state assembly members.Johor has many institutions of higher learning. It has three universities, known as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia situated in Skudai, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia in Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Universiti Teknologi MARA Johor in Segamat and several polytechnics. Johor also has a teaching college called Maktab Perguruan Temenggung Ibrahim. It has one non profit making community college namely Southern College located in Skudai. Culture in Johor has been influenced by visitors and traders throughout history. The main influence would be the Bugis who first came to Johor before continuing on to Melaka and Selangor. The strong Arab influence is clear in art performances like Zapin and Hamdolok, musical instruments like gambus. Other visible legacies in Johor Bahru are the Arabic names of places such as Wadi Hana and Wadi Hassan in regions populated by the Arab community from Hadhramaut in the southeast of Yemen.

Johor has one international airport, known as the Sultan Ismail International Airport in Senai. The airport is also a regional hub of Air Asia.
