Literally meaning "Nine States", Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia is made up of a federation of nine states. Situated to the southwest of Peninsular Malaysia, Negeri Sembilan with its kaleidoscopic landscapes, rugged terrains, rustic villages, abundant greens, rapturous waterfalls and swirling streams is an ecological treasure trove. The Minangkabau-styled architectural buildings stand as testimony to the strong influences of the first inhabitants of the state who came from Sumatra. The Minangkabau people of West Sumatra migrated to Negeri Sembilan during the rule of the Malay Sultanate in the 15th and 16th centuries. The region was a loose confederation of nine fiefdoms. The fiefdoms were unified into a strong whole of Sungai Ujong, Rembau, Johol, Jelebu, Naning, Segamat, Ulu Pahang, Jelai and Kelang under the leadership of Raja Melewar in 1773.
The British intervened in the districts of Sungai Ujong, Rembau and Jelebu to safeguard their economic interests and the country came under the control of a British Resident. The British furthered their influence by entering into a series of treaties with separate states and by bringing them under a closer federation (1895). Negeri Sembilan survived Japanese control during the Second World War and joined the Malaysian federation in 1948, becoming a state of Malaysia thereafter. You can get to Negeri Sembilan from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, just minutes away from the capital city of Sembilan.
