Perak

Perak is the fourth largest of Malaysia's thirteen states after Sarawak. Perak means silver in Bahasa Malaysia. There are several tourist spots of fair interest within the state, but the main tourist destination would probably be Pangkor Island which is about 85km from Ipoh, and Ipoh itself because of its delicious food.

The name of Perak came most probably from the silvery colour of tin. In the 1890s, Perak, with the richest alluvial deposits of tin in the world was one of the most important places in the crown of the British Empire. Some people say that the name came from the glimmer of fish in the water that glittered like silver. The Arab honorific of the State is Darul Ridzuan which is the Land of Grace.

Perak suffered greatly with the decline of those industries that were dominated by tin mining and rubber. Currently efforts have been made to change the economy into one based on industrial or manufacturing. A new car manufacturing hub known as Proton City at Tanjung Malim has been urbanized with the establishment of up to date car manufacturing facilities. The Proton City at Tanjung Malim has become the largest manufacturer of Proton cars in Malaysia.

The population of Perak is now about 2 million. Once Malaysia's most crowded state, the decline in the tin mining industry caused an economic hold back from which it has yet to recover, leading to a massive exhaust in manpower to higher growth states such as Penang, Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The modern history of Perak began with the fall of the Malacca Sultanate.

There are many limestone hills in the central part of the state Perak. Most of them also contain caves. Many of these hills have Chinese temples or Hindu temples on their sides, occasionally extending into the caves. Modern Perak is divided into 9 administrative districts in Malaysia. These 9 districts are again divided into administrative Municipal councils.

If the guests have planned to travel to the East Coast from Perak, they should make sure to take the East-West Highway from Grik to Tanah Merah, Kelantan. The view of mountains is stunning.
