Sabah is a state of Malaysia situated on the northern part of the island of Borneo. Sabah is the second largest state in Malaysia after the state of Sarawak which it borders on its south west. It also borders with the province of East Kalimantan of Indonesia in the southern part. Sabah used to be a British crown colony known as North Borneo prior to partnership with Federation of Malaya, Sarawak & Singapore to figure the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
The western portion of Sabah is usually hilly, containing the three highest mountains in Malaysia. The most famous range is the Crocker Range which features quite a lot of mountains of varying height from about 1,000 metres to 4,000 metres. Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia which is at the height of 4,095 meters and the second highest in Southeast Asia after Puncak Jaya in Indonesia.
Sabah has a self governing political system with universal suffrage. The Yang di-Pertua Negeri sits at the top of the hierarchy followed by the State Legislative assembly and the State Cabinet. A common election for State and Federal level officials is held every five years. The state parliament or the state legislative assembly meets at the state capital, Kota Kinabalu. The state is separated into 25 parliamentary constituencies and 60 state assembly districts where each is characterized by an elected Member of Parliament and Member of the State Legislative Assembly.
The transport system in Sabah is good. The main airport for getting in and out of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu International Airport. MASWings works the rural air service, linking Kota Kinabalu, Kudat, Lahad Datu, Sandakan and Tawau. The air flights use Fokkers and turboprop aircraft. MASWings took over the rural air services network from Fly Asian Express, which in turn took the service over from Malaysia Airlines 14 months before the incident.
Malaysia Airlines has connections to Kota Kinabalu from different countries and territories around the country including Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan and others. AirAsia avails connections from other parts of Malaysia, Macau, Philippines and Thailand. Dragonair runs flights connecting Hong Kong and Kota Kinabalu. Silkair operates code share flights with Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines linking Singapore and Kota Kinabalu.
