Selangor

Selangor is the most densely populated and prosperous state of Malaysia. Selangor was the center of dramatic events of the Civil war. Home to a large number of fishing villages, majestic hills and verdant forests, Selangor in Malaysia is a tourist’s paradise.

Often called “the heart of modern Malaysia,” Selangor boasts an ideal location and rich natural resources. Selangor is the richest and most developed state of Malaysia today.

Getting to Selangor is made easy with easy access from the Port Kiang and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport. You can also reach Selangor from Thailand, Singapore and all parts of the peninsula via the North-South Highway. You can also avail of bus services to explore Selangor tourist attractions.

Catch a glimpse of the rich history of Selangor on Selangor Travel. The history of the city can be traced back to the 16th century. The region had rich tin deposits at this time. The richness of natural resources and its freedom from the frequent invasions of the Dutch, mariners and colonizers made Selangor a thriving city from the early times.

A group of settlers known as the Bugis, a Malay people from Macassar (now Ujung Padang) inhabited Celebes. Bugis migrated from this great port city which consequently led to intrusion of the Dutch over territories previously ruled by Portuguese traders, with whom the Bugis had entered into several alliances. Celebrated as sea traders and warriors, the Bugis soon gained prominence in Selangor. By 1700, they had established both political and economic control. This followed the founding of the modern Sultanate of Selangor under the Bugis.

Over the eighteenth century, Selangor furthered its power base to become a regional political power. With the rise of the western colonial powers in the following century, rampant tussles between the Bugis, Chinese and Malay nobility increased. Selangor was compelled to accept the presence of a British Resident in 1874. In 1896 Selangor was included in the Federated Malay States. In the year 1948 the state joined the Federation of Malaya.

In 1957 the Federation was recognized as an independent state within the Commonwealth of Nations. Today Selangor is the most flourishing state of Malaysia. Port Klang of Selangor is the largest port in the country.

The culture of Selangor is a medley of diverse ethnic groups featuring the Malays, Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and other races. Some of the major attractions you must explore on Selangor travel are Shah Alam, Klang, Kuala Selangor, Taman Alam, Waterfalls, Taman Pertanian Malaysia, Sunway Lagoon, Petaling Jaya, Batu Caves, Zoo Negara and Tunku Abdul Rahman Aquarium.
