Ségou is a city situated in the south-central Mali stretching 235 kilometers northeast of Bamako beside the River Niger. The Facts about Segou says that Ségou was established by the Bozo people in the years1620 on a site approximately 10 kilometers from the present town. With more than 100,000 population, this is considered to be the third largest city in Mali.

The culture of Segou region is varied. Segou's cultural heritage features traditional musical instruments, magnificent griots, folkloric crowds and the conventional masks and marionettes. The history of the Bambara's traditional religious practices is vague. They perform animism and fetishism as cultural practices that are also totemic and monism. The most renowned Segou handcrafts are founded on pottery, weaving, manufacturing of Bogolan, painting and sculpture. Segou is also considered as the capital of Malian pottery including a huge pottery district in Kalabougou, which is located on the left bank.

Segou town has two distinct architectural manners. The first style is the French regal style and the second style is conventional architecture: like Sudanese and neo-Sudanese. The Sudanese manner prejudiced communal building and significant residences. Monuments and grand mosques are also situated concerning this style.
