Djenne, Mopti is known as the oldest town of the sub-Saharan Africa and is located on the flood prone areas of the Niger and Bani rivers. You will find Djenne, Mopti located 354 kilometers away from the popular city of Timbuktu. Legends say that the region of Djenne in Mopti was founded by merchants in the 800 AD. The Djenne, Mopti was captured by the Songhai emperor Sonni 'Ali in the year 1468 and the region was transformed in to Mali's most significant trading center during the 16th century. This mosque is believed by most of the architects as one of the finest creation of the Sudano-Sahelian era and is the most renowned building of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style. The first mosque on this site was built in the 13th century and the structure that exists still now was built in the year 1907.
