Dogon Country

The Dogon Country, Mopti is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mopti in Mali. This place of interest is situated in close proximity to Mopti. Visit to the Dogon Country, Mopti is a must while on a trip to Mopti.

The people of the Dogon Country, Mopti live in a number of villages along the Badiagara escarpment. This is divided any three zones - the plateau, the cliff, and the lower plains. It was in the 14th or 15th century when the people of the Dogon Country arrived here, displacing the Tellem people. Even today you can witness the cave-like homes where the Tellem people used to live. These abodes are perched high on the cliffs above the Dogon villages. The lower plains of the Dogon Country, Mopti are shared with the people of Fulani.

The people of the Dogon Country, Mopti are agricultural. They use buckets to irrigate their millet, cotton, and onion fields. They are chiefly animist in their religious beliefs. Hence, they attribute a living soul to natural objects and phenomena. They also worship their ancestors, some of whom are buried above the cliff villages in the erstwhile Tellem area. Rituals are performed by members of the 'Society of Masks' so that the 'life force' of a person escapes from his or her corpse to a future relative of the same family.

The villages of the Dogon Country, Mopti are home to some unique structures. You can witness the open low-ceilinged structure known as togu na. There are three layers of millet placed on top of the togu na. These layers represent the plateau, the cliffs, and the plains.

The granaries are other remarkable structures in the Dogon Country in Mopti in Mali. The granaries look similar to shoeboxes on end. These are topped by thatched roofs, which look like witches' hats. The granaries serve the purpose of storing millet and household goods. Most of the homes in the Dogon villages are of box-shape. They have flat roofs, and are ideal for sleeping.

Home to various unique structures, the Dogon Country, Mopti is a nice place to visit.
