Mauritius is a place where you would love to visit if you are planning your honeymoon or your long awaited vacation or simply want to spend some time with your loved ones in a beautiful location. Thus for years, Mauritius has been the hotspot for tourists.
Mauritius first found mentioning in the writings of the Arab and the Malay sailors. The Portuguese were the first to visit this place and the Dutch were the next to follow. After long years of colonial suppression Mauritius became independent finally in the year 1968. Since independence Mauritius has gained economically too and from a low income country it has slowly raised to a position that now it is regarded as the country having the 2nd highest GDP in the whole of Africa. Sugarcane is the main cash crop of the country which is grown on 90% of the cultivated land and accounts for 25% of the export of the country.
The main revenue generator for the country is however, the tourism of Mauritius because with time Mauritius has become more lucrative to the tourists with its abundant natural beauty of azure sea and white beaches. The main language of Mauritius is English and it is already given the status of official language. However, Mauritius Creole is the major dialect that is spoken widely throughout the island. This is because though the Indo Mauritians form about 70% of the population, 30% Creoles dominate the scene. You would also find a handsome number of Chinese populations too in Mauritius. Thus you can see the culture of Mauritius is a melting pot of both Asian and African culture.
When the Portuguese first came to Mauritius, the island country was inhabited by a flightless bird which the Portuguese named as Dodo. Though the Dodo was extinct within 1681 by the Portuguese settlers for their meat as well as their domesticated animal, still it remains in the national coat-of-arms of Mauritius.
A very interesting trend is seen in Mauritius and that is mostly seen in the cuisine of Mauritius and that is the cuisine of Mauritius is also multi-cultural having a nice blend of Indian, Chinese, Creole and European. Therefore, when you are in Mauritius you might have a combination of foods from all of these places in one meal.
