Mexico

Commonly referred to as Mexico, the United Mexican States is a part of North America, bordered by the United States on the north, North Pacific Ocean on the south and west, Guatemala, Belize and Caribbean Sea on the southeast and Gulf of Mexico on the east. Spread across an approximate area of 2 million square kilometers, Mexico is the 14th largest country in the world.

A land of rich diversity, the history of Mexico can be traced back to the Pre-Columbian civilization which is rated to have existed approximately three thousand years ago. The country was named Mexico after the independence from Spain in 1500s. The name was derived from the Nahua Aztec Tribes of the region who were known as Mexica. Today, the country is a federation of thirty-one free and sovereign states, each of which has its own constitution and congress.

The diverse geography of Mexico also affects the climatic condition of the country. Divided by the Tropic of Cancer into temperate and tropical zones, the state of Mexico observes moderate climatic conditions with temperatures constant through out the year. One of the aspects for which the country has become a favored holiday spot among nature lovers is its biodiversity. Home to over 200,000 different species, Mexico houses 10-12 percent of the world's biodiversity. To preserve the eco-system, around 170,000 square kilometers of the total area of the country has been proclaimed as 'Protected Natural Areas' consisting of 34 reserve biospheres, 64 natural parks, 26 areas of flora and fauna, 17 sanctuaries and other natural resources.

One of the most important aspects of the country which has boosted the economy of Mexico is the tourism industry which has been further boosted by the many festivals and events which are celebrated across the country. Rated as the seventh most popular destinations in the world, Mexico plays host to approximately 20 million tourists every year.

While touring this diverse landscape, make sure that you buy yourself a souvenir from the many shopping malls of the country. The authentic articles which make great souvenirs are wood carvings, paintings and carved masks which reflect on the indigenous art of Mexico.
