The Catedral de San Ildefonso is the oldest in Mexico and was built over an ancient Mayan temple. The construction of the cathedral started in the year 1561on the initiative of Bishop Toral Fray. Many of the stones that were used were taken from the building pre Hispanic. The School of San Ildefonso was established when the San Bernardo, San Greforio and San Miguel schools were clubbed in the 18th century. The Catedral de San Ildefonso was completed in 1598 by the master builder Juan Miguel Aguero and is notable for its Renaissance facade.
There are three accesses semicircular arch, two towers with three bodies with a window on the coral which is an eagle on a nopal. The interior has the Gothic architecture. The rare three covers the Gothic, a Plateresque (XVI) and a third neoclassical (XVIII). The remains of Andres de Vandelvira is buried in the church, who is the architect of the cathedral of Jaen and Ubeda, who passed away in1575.
The interior has a huge ship with Tuscan columns, several chapels, a neo classical style structure, stressing the vials of the Christ, an image which is carved in to a trunk. The legend widespread in Merida has it that image burned the entire night without suffering any harm to it. The Catedral de San Ildefonso is situated on the eastern side of the main square in the street 6061.
The ancient chronicles say that Mary fell in heavenly love with the city of Jaen in the night from June 10 to 11, in 1430 as a procession passed from the cathedral to reach the church of San Ildefonso. This love led to devotion in Jaen to the Virgin of the Chapel, which feast is celebrated on June.
