The last most devastating hurricane that had hit the island is Gilbert. It hit the island in 1988. It took years to recover from the storm. Some of the shallow reefs took a longer time to recover. The damage that was made to the finger coral was a lot. From the reefs, lot of sand had been blown away expanding and bringing out tunnels and caverns beneath the reefs. There was a fine sand cover. But all the sand was removed by the natural currents that swept past the reefs. Only the fish and other sea creatures survived.
