National Museum of Anthropology

Make it a point to visit the National Museum of Anthropology during your visit to Mexico City. You can site this museum on the Avenida Paseo de la Reforma and Calzada Gandhi. It is one of the most prominent museums, which is located outside the historical site of the Chapultepec Park. National Museum of Anthropology is unique piece of architecture and one of its kinds in the whole world. At the entrance of the National Museum of Anthropology, you can find a monolithic statue of supposedly rain god Tlaloc. But according to some source, the statue is of the water goddess Chalchiuhtlicue. The colossal and huge figure of the divine figure is a masterpiece of its own kind. The unfinished figure weighs about one hundred and sixty seven tones and was said to be found neat the site of San Miguel Coatlinchan. But it was later transported to the entrance of the museum.

This internationally famous museum was planed by a renowned architect Pedro Ramirez Vazquez. National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City was built around 1963 and 1964. It stands as a testimony to the modern architectural skills and talent of the modern craftsmen. Here, you can find varied displays of the art treasures.

The main courtyard, a significant part of the museum, is covered by a huge stone umbrella, which was done by Jose Chavez Morado. The stone umbrella is supported by a total of eleven columns. The entire museum is strategically divided in to two parts, which display different aspects.

On the ground floor of the museum, you can find twelve spacious rooms, exhibiting various archeological discoveries done by the various archeologists over the years. You can get to know about the life styles of the modern Indian inhabitant of Mexico from the displays at the upper floor.

The National Museum of Anthropology also houses gift shops selling various souvenirs. At the museum, for the convenience of understanding of the tourists, there are arrangements for audio visual presentations. You can easily reach the museum from the Chapultepec station. It remains open from 9:00 hours to the 19:00 hours. On Sunday it closes down at 18:00 hours. It must be noted that it remains closed on Mondays. You can also visit various other Tourist Attractions in and around the Mexico City, without which your tour will remain incomplete.
