National Palace

One of the major tourist attractions in the Mexico City includes the National Palace. This place is the seat for the federal executive in Mexico. You can conveniently locate this National Palace at the heart of the Mexico City. The main square of Mexico City, the Plaza de la Constitucion is located close to this exotic destination. This palace was built during 1563 after the invasion of New Spain. This palace was reconstructed between 1659 and 1692 after it was destroyed by the fire. During reconstruction, National Palace was built in its present form.

National Palace houses all important branches of governments including the executive, legislative and judiciary. John A. Quitman was the first to rule from this palace after the Mexican-American War. It was later renamed as the Imperial Palace by the Mexican Empire Maximilian I. with the end of this empire, it again regained its previous name of National Palace. After that it continued to be the place for the executive authority.

To celebrate the history of Mexico, Diego Rivera set up in the palace majestic murals. These wall paintings cover a large portion of the wall and enhance the beauty of the palace. The paintings also reflect the artistic skill of the muralists. Other than being the seat for the executive authority, it houses various other offices and regions of interest like Juarez Hall, Office of the Secretary of Finance, Morisco Hall, Parliamentary enclosure, gallery of the presidents and others.

This historical building is a great collection of art and paintings. The façade of the building is over two hundred meters. National Palace in Mexico City is built of reddish tezontle stone, which imparts this palace a touch of elegance. This palace comprises innumerable rooms that are extended with courtyards. Some of these rooms remain open for the tourists. National Palace candidly marks the rich cultural heritage of the city. Here, you can also see the principle State Archives and important historical documents.

The National Palace remains open from 9:00 hours to 17:30 hours. Only on Monday it opens at 10:00 am and the closing time remains the same. Saturday and Sunday remains closed for the tourists.
