Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca



Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca is a famous tourist attraction center in Oxaca. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 20:00. Entrance fee is not charged from children under 13 years, students, teachers and seniors with ID. Photography of all kind is permitted after payment of extra charge. Services provided in the museum include areas and multipurpose auditorium for exhibitions and cultural events, rest areas, guided tours for groups of students and sale of publications and reproductions.

The museum consists of the following display:

Ancient Cultures (10,000 BC-200 AD)
About 10,000 years ago, the first groups of nomadic hunter-gatherers settled in the territory occupied oaxaqueño caves as a refuge. The oldest objects found so far in the valley of Oaxaca are tips projectile attesting to the presence of those.

Time of bloom (200-900 AD)
This is when the city became the largest in the Valley of Oaxaca and functioned as a political center of the cities that depended minor. In this era the ruling elites developed highly advanced knowledge such as astronomy, calendar, writing jeroglifica, monumental architecture and metalwork.

The treasures from the tomb 7
The famous tomb 7 Monte Alban, discovered by archeologist Alfonso Caso on January 9, 1932, was built by the Zapotec during the classic period. Later, during the posclásico was reused by the Mixtec to bury a noble along with the breathtaking treasures recovered by Case.

Contact and conquest (sixteenth century)
The conquest of Oaxaca was initiated in 1519 by Tuxtepec, in the north of the current state. Some people set up alliances. Others were brought by force of arms. The Spanish introduced cattle and poultry, various plants, seeds and tools. The weapons, and especially epidemics, caused an enormous amount of deaths among Indians.
