The zócalo is the main square, which is located in the center of the city. It was constructed in the year 1529. On the southern part of the zócalo is a notable building that previously housed the state office. The northern part of this square has the famous Cathedral of Oaxaca, which is built around 1535. The zócalo is a point to meet, relax and enjoy a live musical performance.
A number of cafes and restaurants surround the Zocalo in Oaxaca City. Tourists will love sitting in the sidewalk table and watching the activities in the square is a popular pastime. The zócalo is also the favored site of common political rallies and disputes. One of the largest and more probable impulsive events is the yearly Oaxaca Teachers' Union group.
In the year 2005, major portions of the Zocalo in Oaxaca City had undergone renovation with heavy machinery. Huge Indian Laurel trees were uprooted and fell against the Government Palace. This resulted in public disagreement against the renovation project.
There are four fountains, new pavement with cobbled stones. The trees were planted in the middle of the performance area in the Zocalo. The flowerbeds heights were increased.
