There are 300 steps to reach the caves, which are about 98 meters to 40 meters in height.
These caves houses traces of human existence making it a historic site. There are remains of animal bones which served as the food for the human beings who lived in these caves. These remains give an idea of the climate which prevailed in the region some 2,50,000 years ago.
In the other chambers of the Cave there are stalactites, stalagmites and limestone incrustations. The fascinating concretions found in these caves even include, curtains, spaghetti and column like concretions.
The caves are mainly made of calcareous rocks, which have been hollowed out by water which is rich in Carbon dioxide.
The Observatory Caves remains opens daily though the timings are changed from time to time. From May15 to September 15, the site remains open from 9:00 AM-7:00 PM. From September 16-May14, the caves remain open from 9:00 AM-6:00 PM or nightfall. The place remains closed on November 19- December 25. So, plan your Moneghetti Tour schedule accordingly.
The rates applicable to the admission fees are very moderate. Children within the age group of 6 to 18 years and students are offered a discounted rate.
