There are some very interesting facts about Asilah which attract the tourists from all over the world. Everyone visiting the city have a great time here and take back some of the most cherished memories which bring smiles on their faces whenever they think about them. One of the amazing facts about Asilah is that it has a history which dates back to 16th century B.C. The city of Asilah or Arzila as it is also known as is at present a popular sea-side resort where you will come across modern and updated apartment complexes along the coast road which leads to the town of Tangier.

The history of Asilah can be traced back to around 1500 B.C. when it was used as a base for trade by the Phoenicians . During the 15th century the town was occupied by the Portuguese but later in 1549, John III decided to abandon the place owing to acute economic crisis. Again in the year 1692, the town of Asilah was taken over by the Moroccans being lead by Moulay Ismail. The city was a part of the Spanish Morocco during the years between 1912 and 1956. this city has been a witness to many things and one of them being serving as a base for the pirates in the 19th and 20th centuries.

In the recent past a project has been undertaken to restore the old town which still stands as a testimony to the rich cultural heritage of the country in the year 1978. At preset the town stands as a popular seaside resort town which has many modern apartment complexes lining the road along the coast leading to the town of Tangier. Asilah hosts the annual music and arts festivals which attract the tourists from all over the globe who come here to enjoy these festivals.

The economy of Asilah is based on fishing as well as trading of various cattle, cereals and sheep. Though tourism is also a major industry in Asilah but mostly the Moroccan travelers come to this place as not many people around the globe know about this beautiful historic city in he country of Morocco.
