History of Morocco is interesting and fascinating. The land of Morocco has been home to the Barbers since the second millennium B.C. It was captured by the Rome as part of Mauritania. The vandal overran the portion at the time of decline of the empire in the 5th century. In 685, the Arabs invaded circa and brought Islam. The Barbers joined the Arabs in the invasion of Spain in 711, but soon they revolted against the Arabs as they found themselves having secondary status. According to History of Morocco, a large part of Moorish Spain was taken control by the Barbers, when they were thrown out in the 13th century.
The land of Morocco rarely came under unification and it was ruled by small tribal states. There were regular conflicts between Barber and the Arabs. After the attack of Morocco by Portugal and Spain, the country got some unification of its land in defense. The country then came under the control of the Alawite dynasty, which was a sheriff dynasty and a direct descended from the Prophet Muhammad. The dynasty still rules Morocco.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, Morocco became one of the Barber States and it became the headquarter of the Pirates. From 1840, the European Powers started colonizing the country and there are frequent clashes with the French and the Spanish. The country was finally colonized in 1904, with France and Spain concluding a secret agreement which divided Morocco in to two zones. The French controlled most part of Morocco while the small southern portion was controlled by Spain and came to be known as Spanish Sahara.
Morocco became an object of rivalry by the different European countries at the turn of the last century. This almost led to a European war in 1905, when Germany tried to make an entry in Morocco, which also happens to be a mineral rich country. In 1906, the Algeciras Conference helped the Sultan of Morocco to maintain control of his land and curtailing the power of France. This led to siding of Germany and Austria-Hungary on one side and France, Britain and the United States on the other side. The French protectorate status was permitted by the Sultan of Morocco in 1912. History of Morocco has it that there was an expansion of nationalism during world was II. Though the Sultan Muhammed V was de-posted in 1953 by the French, the nationalist agitation brought him back in 1953. France and Spain recognized the independence as well as sovereignty of Morocco in 1956. When Muhammed V died in February 26, 1961, his son succeeded him as King Hassan II. He promulgated the "hassan democracy", which gave significant political freedom and also retain the power for the monarch. After 38 years of rule, King Hassan II died in1999 and his son was crowned King Muhammed VI.
