The Islamic college of Ali ben Youssef Medersa, Marrakech, also known as Bin Yousuf Madrassa, is one of the popular Tourist Attractions in Marrakech. Originally built in the 14th century, Sultan Abdullah el Ghallib re-erected the Ali ben Youssef Medersa, Marrakech almost completely 200 years later and added refined details in the carved cedar, stucco plasterwork and the mosaics. The large courtyard opens onto a tastefully decorated prayer hall housing rare palm motifs.
Built during the period of the Merinid (14th century) by the Merinid sultan Abu al-Hassan, Ali ben Youssef Medersa, Marrakech was named after the famous sultan Ali ibn Yusuf.
As many as 900 students from Muslim countries all over the world once studied here. Their sleeping quarters were arranged around the courtyard and the tiny upper-level rooms resemble monks' cells. One of its best known teachers was Mohammed El Ifrani (1670-1745). The medersa also features a small mosque. Closed down in 1960, the building was renovated and reopened to the visitors as an historical site in 1982.
